East Somerville Initiative Report: Preventing Displacement

The East Somerville Initiative was a two-year, community-based planning process that provided a concrete example of how to involve residents in discussing and planning for the future of their community. Over 350 people were involved in developing and implementing an Action Plan to “proactively improve conditions in East Somerville while taking strong steps to minimize the displacement of the diverse population of people who live here.” Spring 2008.

Somerville sits on the original homelands of the Massachusett, Wampanoag, Naumkeag, and Nipmuc tribal nations. We acknowledge the painful history of genocide and forced removal from this territory, and we honor and respect the many diverse Indigenous peoples still connected to this land on which we live and work.
