Affordable Homes Act

We’re thrilled to celebrate the signing of the Affordable Homes Act by Governor Maura Healey! This $5.2 billion bill is a huge step forward in tackling the housing crisis and increasing affordable housing options across the state. Key highlights include a historic $2 billion investment in public housing renovations, the statewide approval of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), new protections for tenants through eviction record sealing, and substantial funding for sustainable housing initiatives.

While some provisions, like the local option real estate transfer fee and office-to-residential conversion support, didn’t make it through, the Act represents a significant victory for housing equity. A huge thank you to Governor Healey and all the advocates who made this possible. As Governor Healey said, “We’re not done yet!”

Somerville sits on the original homelands of the Massachusett, Wampanoag, Naumkeag, and Nipmuc tribal nations. We acknowledge the painful history of genocide and forced removal from this territory, and we honor and respect the many diverse Indigenous peoples still connected to this land on which we live and work.
