Celebrating 50 Years!! Together Into the Future: One small step… one giant leap.

<--break->

50 years ago, on a warm day in June, 1969, a group of about a dozen people got together to launch a community based organization to serve Somerville’s low-income population by providing resources (including a food pantry) and a place to gather.  This organization blossomed into the Somerville Community Corporation—Somerville’s first and only community development corporation.
This June, SCC will kick off a year of activities and events to commemorate our first 50 years and to launch the beginning of our next era.  We will invite people to reminisce about the past decades, and to envision the brilliant Somerville of 2069.  Our theme:  “Together Into the Future: One Small Step . . .One Giant Leap”–an homage to the first moon landing, also in 1969, as well as an invitation to imagine our bright future together.   Here’s what’s ahead:

  • June 20th, 2019:  Launch Breakfast at the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse, 8:00am-10:00am
  • Fall, 2019: Vision 2069 Forum:  an invitation to the community to share videos, presentations, 3D street renditions, etc. to explore our future
  • Winter, 2020:  Moon and Stars Gala
  • Spring, 2020: Orbiting Somerville events
  • June, 2020:  June Landing: Closing event

We look forward to celebrating with all of you!  Questions or ideas, please contact: SCC_50th@somervillecdc.org will be commemorating SCC’s history and launching into our future through a year of activities from June, 2019-June, 2020.

Somerville sits on the original homelands of the Massachusett, Wampanoag, Naumkeag, and Nipmuc tribal nations. We acknowledge the painful history of genocide and forced removal from this territory, and we honor and respect the many diverse Indigenous peoples still connected to this land on which we live and work.
