Karen Narefsky is a Chicago native who has been living in Somerville since 2011. She has been involved in many of Boston’s interconnected social justice movements, including labor organizing, transit justice and immigrant rights.
Karen’s work at SCC includes member recruitment, leadership development and campaign strategy. She has helped lead the campaign for 20% inclusionary zoning citywide, which was approved in May 2016. She has helped lead the campaign for a strong community benefits agreement as part of the Union Square redevelopment, which is ongoing.
In addition, Karen cofacilitates SCC’s annual Leadership Development Institute, where she trains residents in the basics of leadership and community organizing.
Before starting at SCC, Karen was part of successful cafeteria worker organizing drives with UNITE HERE Local 26. She also worked at Alternatives for Community and Environment (ACE) as an intern specializing in communications.
Karen studied romance languages and literatures, and speaks Spanish, Portuguese, French and a little bit of Haitian Creole. This skill set is quite an asset for SCC, since many of our members speak these languages as well.
