Financial Literacy Graduation

A group of eight seriously-focused students received their diplomas in a mid-October ceremony after completing the most recent multi-week Financial Literacy class class.Five of the students were referred by the Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experience, or SCALE, and three of those students were part of the Just a Start Program. SCC Asset Building Specialist Janine Lotti, who teaches the Financial Literacy classes at SCC’s Somerville Avenue office, facilitated the learning.

“What was really special about this class,” Janine explains, “is that the program helped five of the young adults make substantial progress on their path to receiving an Adult Diploma.”

The students learned about setting goals, creating a personal budget, building and improving credit scores, and saving money for the future. Students were expected to set a personal goal aimed at using their new financial literacy skills to accomplish by the end of the class.

Somerville sits on the original homelands of the Massachusett, Wampanoag, Naumkeag, and Nipmuc tribal nations. We acknowledge the painful history of genocide and forced removal from this territory, and we honor and respect the many diverse Indigenous peoples still connected to this land on which we live and work.
