More than 100 Somerville community members attended a public hearing on Thursday, November 10, 2016, before the City’s Board of Aldermen to discuss the urgent need for a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) as part of the Union Square redevelopment.

As in other years, September brought the return to school of the thousands of K-12 students who live in Somerville. Crossing guards at many intersections, kids walking with backpacks, and extra traffic at 7:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. are among the many signs of this annual transition to fall.

What’s Happening with Zoning in Somerville?

During fall 2016, the City of Somerville’s Planning Department proposed changes to the Union Square zoning laws. The Planning Department is hoping to introduce a revised version of the citywide zoning overhaul sometime in 2017.

The first round of the overhaul was actually released in January 2015. However, the Board of Aldermen felt that the new ordinance wasn’t ready and decided not to vote on it.
