Since the 2018 100 Homes Lottery, 8 households have moved into apartments in the 100 Homes program from the Priority List. This includes multiple households who were experiencing homelessness, who could not place their vouchers in Somerville, or who were going to be evicted by no fault of their own. We are still accepting applications for the program on a rolling basis. Applications are available at the SCC office and on our website.
We welcome Lizzie Devane to the SCC team as our new Communications & Development Manager. A local progressive activist, Lizzie is passionate about politics, poetry, plants, sci fi, music, and meditation. She was born in London, grew up in Washington DC, teaches yoga, and is learning how to rock climb and keep bees. Lizzie is excited to connect with the Somerville community through her role helping SCC strengthen its capacity via engaging communications and resource development.
Without question, SCC’s most valuable resource is its people---the leaders who spend countless hours building influential campaigns; the job seekers who attend our Networking Café, and make their rounds to say hello to staff; the real estate partners who make sure our bricks go up; our board and community members who bring an event like this to life; the donors who extend our mission even further---we couldn't do it without you. Our Annual Dinner reminds us just how lucky we are to have all of you under our metaphorical roof—and literally under the roof of the Armory. What a fantastic and full crowd to reflect our vital community! Read more about SCC's Annual Dinner: A Full and Festive Evening
We like to think of the holiday season as a time of joy and celebration. Sometimes, it is. Sometimes, though, this season---and the rough Winter that follows---can bring with it anxiety and worry about how to provide holiday happiness and Winter security for those we love. Here in Somerville, there are a number of agencies and services to help. Read more about Holiday Resources
We are in the final stretch of our 2018 Social Equity Campaign through the Community Investment Tax Credit program. We still have 2018 tax credits to distribute, so if you are able to donate $1000 or more, you'll be able to get a 50% credit against your tax liability, or a refund for that amount if you don't have a tax liability. Just make sure to make your donation by December 31st, 2018 to get the 2018 tax credit. We'll be here to greet you at the office, or you can send by mail. It's like a holiday every day as donations come in! Read more about Social Equity Campaign Full Speed Ahead
In late September, the SCC Board of Directors adopted a new 5-year strategic plan for SCC’s work to cover the years 2019-2023. This reflects a year of work in various committees, task forces, and communication with stakeholders. Meant to be a “living document” rather than a plan that gathers dust on the shelf, SCC’s strategic plan charts a bold vision for the next 5 years – not really a departure, but rather building on our work of the last several years. On the last day of the State Legislature’s Formal Session, the Legislation passed two home rule petitions that allow for the plans to redevelop the Clarendon: H4580 provides authorization for the Somerville Housing Authority to engage with a private development partner to redevelop the Clarendon property; and H4856 allows for a land swap between Somerville Housing Authority and the State Department of Conservation and Recreation that will allow for the replacement of the rotary at Powder House and Alewife with a fully signaled T-intersection.Read more about Clarendon Redevelopment Gets State Approval
