The Restaurant Opportunities Center of Boston and Somerville Community Corporation are partnering through our First Source Hiring Program to offer Somerville residents a free Server and Bartender Training. During these classes, students will be able to get skills to build a career in the restaurant industry. This is a unique opportunity for Somerville residents looking to work for the many restaurants across Somerville.

Join Union United on a community tour to learn about the past, present, and future of organizing and community-building in Union Square.

We'll start at the northern corner of Somerville Ave and Bow Street, close to Market Basket, and finish in Union Square Plaza by SCATV. Then we'll head over to CrossFit Somerville for a potluck!

Pocket Change Mock Interview Preparation

A more in depth discussion on interviewing, building on the Interview prep workshops from last week.  Participants will answer interview questions using Interview Jenga and will also practice mock interviews with a partner using a role play script where one person will be the employer and one person will be the prospective employee. Participants will be better prepared to answer difficult interview questions.

SCC is thrilled to report that on July 7 Governor Patrick announced funding and tax credit allocations to 24 affordable housing projects across the state, including SCC’s 181 Washington Street project.  SCC is very grateful to Representative Michael E. Capuano, 7th District, MA;  Senator Patricia Jehlen, 2nd Middlesex District; Representative Denise Provost, 27th Middlesex District; and Mayor Joseph A.

163 Glen Street Homeownership Project

SCC submitted a Special Permit Application to the ZBA for a hearing on July 16 to adaptively re-use the former East Somerville American Legion Post building as 11 homeownership units, 8 of which will be restricted as affordable homeownership opportunities and 3 of which will be market rate homeownership opportunities. The affordable units will target to both low- and middle income households.

Annual Summer Member Gathering

Every summer we plan a work-free, all-fun evening for our members to get together, enjoy good food, swap stories of what we’ve been up to, and relax. The whole family is welcome and encouraged to come. Last year we started the tradition of an open-mic talent show, which surpassed our expectations!  Bring a song, a poem, a skit, or anything else you’d like to share with the crowd.
