Somerville First Source Jobs: Connecting Somerville Workers with Somerville Jobs

What is First Source?

The First Source Jobs program connects people who are looking for jobs with local employers. This is a partnership between City of Somerville, SCC, The Career Place, and local employers.

How it Works:

SCC will keep a list of local workers and their skills, so they can be contacted first when new jobs are available in Somerville. Ideally, employers will hire from the First Source list before posting positions to the general public.

The list can also identify workers who need more training so they are qualified for future jobs in the city. People who enroll in the program have access to job readiness workshops, skill training, and case management, as well as to postings of job openings.

What is Pocket Change

Pocket Change is a FIrst Source program focused on youth between 18 and 24 years old.  This program offers training workshops, orientation, and connection to temporary jobs to help youth build skills towards permanent work.

Why is First Source important?

As Somerville develops, many people are being displaced because they lack economic stability. Local jobs can help people afford to live in Somerville and take advantage of new development. Only 15% of Somerville residents currently work in Somerville. This means more time commuting, less money going into the local economy, and less time to spend with family and participate in the community.

A First Source system is good for employers, because they can hire from a pool of qualified local workers who have the training and support to be successful on the job.  Local employees have shorter commutes and deeper ties to the community. Employers are recognizing the value to hiring locally; it’s good for business.
