Neighborhood Meeting: Monday, April 8th

We are pleased to announce that on Monday, April 8th, the Somerville Community Corporation, together with our partners at Cathartes Private Investments and Alderman Tom Taylor, will be hosting a neighborhood meeting to discuss our proposed development at 197 Washington Street (Cota Funeral Home) and 181 Washington Street (Boys and Girls Club). The meeting will be held at 6:30 pm at the Argenziano School at 290 Washington Street in Somerville, and will be facilitated by Attorney Adam Dash. We hope to see a lot of neighborhood faces in the room!

Dear Neighbor of 181 Washington Street:

On behalf of all of us at Somerville Community Corporation, we want to thank you for your interest in the opportunity to convert the old Boys and Girls Club on Washington Street into combined rental and commercial space.  We have continued to work over the summer on details of this exciting development, and want to take this opportunity to update you briefly:

Neighborhood Participation

Somerville Community Corporation has a long history of engaging neighbors in each of its development projects.  As a membership organization committed to community involvement, we know that our work in all areas of the organization is infinitely stronger when community residents take part in shaping it.

Upcoming Community Meeting

Since SCC's February 15th, 201 purchase of 181 Washington Street from the Boys and Girls Club, we have held five community meetings for nearly 500 neighbors and others in the community to learn about and provide input on the project- this is ultimately what has guided our work since our inception in 1969- community input. These meetings have included formal presentations from our development and design team and consultants, interactive design workshops, and neighborhood walking tours.

Marga Hutcheson would love to stay in Somerville and lay down roots after graduate school, but she's pretty sure she won't be able to afford the skyrocketing rents in her neighborhood after the Green Line comes in.  Subrina Thapa graduated from Somerville High and has lived in Union Square since moving from Nepal at age 11 but will be soon be moving because there are no affordable homes here that can accommodate her family.

No Vote on 181/197 Washington; Planning Board to Meet Again 7/18

No votes were made at last week's Planning Board meeting to discuss the SCC/Cathartes proposal for 181/197 Washington Street (read the Somerville Journal article here). At this point, the board remains split on whether or not to approve a permit for the project, and will reconvene this Thursday, July 18th at (or before) 7 pm in the Aldermanic Chambers at City Hall, Somerville.
