SCC is celebrating a full year of exciting activities and events to commemorate the impressive achievements and wonderful memories of our first 50 years and to blast off together into our dynamic next era. We invite you to reminisce about the past decades of community building, and to envision a brilliant Somerville of 2069. Our theme - "Together Into the Future: One Small Step . . .One Giant Leap" - is an homage to the first moon landing, also in 1969, as well as a call to imagine the possibilities of our bright future. Charlene Stallworth graduated in 2018 from the Culinary Arts Job Training program run by SCC and Bunker Hill Community College, and went on to get hired as a cook at the Envoy Hotel on the gorgeous Boston waterfront. This Spring she came back to First Source to refine her interview skills for a potential culinary opportunity at Encore Boston Harbor. After her interview, Charlene was immediately offered a position as First Cook and is excited to take her career to a new level! Congrats Charlene!!
Since the 2018 100 Homes Lottery, 8 households have moved into apartments in the 100 Homes program from the Priority List. This includes multiple households who were experiencing homelessness, who could not place their vouchers in Somerville, or who were going to be evicted by no fault of their own. We are still accepting applications for the program on a rolling basis. Applications are available at the SCC office and on our website.
We welcome Lizzie Devane to the SCC team as our new Communications & Development Manager. A local progressive activist, Lizzie is passionate about politics, poetry, plants, sci fi, music, and meditation. She was born in London, grew up in Washington DC, teaches yoga, and is learning how to rock climb and keep bees. Lizzie is excited to connect with the Somerville community through her role helping SCC strengthen its capacity via engaging communications and resource development.
Without question, SCC’s most valuable resource is its people---the leaders who spend countless hours building influential campaigns; the job seekers who attend our Networking Café, and make their rounds to say hello to staff; the real estate partners who make sure our bricks go up; our board and community members who bring an event like this to life; the donors who extend our mission even further---we couldn't do it without you. Our Annual Dinner reminds us just how lucky we are to have all of you under our metaphorical roof—and literally under the roof of the Armory. What a fantastic and full crowd to reflect our vital community! Read more about SCC's Annual Dinner: A Full and Festive Evening
On December 13th, SCC hosted a double-header evening of festivities: the Cake Party and our 2nd PechaKucha . First, our second annual Cake Party! This is an end-of year event to bring members together to enjoy a social evening, and to celebrate the work of this past year. We also very much appreciate the donations we received to support our work! We’ve started a tradition to raffle off cakes at the event. Thanks to all of you who contributed gorgeous cakes to the party. The winners left the party with cakes and smiles.
Immediately following the Cake Party we walked down our back stairs to go to the Remnant Brewery at Bow Market, where we held Volume 2 of the PechaKucha Night. That night we learned about food recovery, we heard about the travails of home ownership, and we shared a few toasts. Read more about 2nd Annual Cake Party and PechaKucha Festivities!
