Our Alderman need to hear from you that the residents of Clarendon Hill deserve quality, new housing and that Somerville needs to protect this critical affordable housing resource! Please come and express your support!
Built in 1948, the Clarendon public housing development is now obsolete, in deteriorated condition, and dangerously close to a point where a shutdown would need to be considered. Current residents are living in apartments that are undersized and in disrepair, many suffering from severe mold and mildew problems. The Somerville Housing Authority has done an admirable job maintaining Clarendon, but simply has woefully insufficient resources to keep up.
Beginning two years ago, the Commonwealth offered an opportunity to SHA to seek a partner to redevelop the Clarendon site in a way that would include brand new quality public housing for its residents. The Development Team of Preservation of Affordable Housing, Gate Residential, and Somerville Community Corporation was selected. The Development Team, SHA, Clarendon residents, and City officials have worked diligently to come up with a plan that will work to ensure this critical affordable housing resources is replenished for decades to come.
The plan requires a home rule petition to be approved first by the Somerville Board of Aldermen, then by the State Legislature. The Petition enables the Development Team to build and operate the new public units on behalf of the Housing Authority.
